Product Description The award-winning book is now revised and expanded. In 2001 an international panel of distinguished climate scientists announced that the world is the earth at a rate without precedent during at least the last ten thousand, and that the warming caused by the construction of greenhouse gases from human activities. The story of how scientists reached that conclusion, through unexpected twists, said Spencer Weart in The Discovery of Global War. . . More>>

  • Dr. Weart has been given an extra star for his efforts to the early history of climate research that cover. It is it.Ik was a sort of disgusted by this book, for what I was expecting a story about a number of scientific discoveries in connection with the global climate. A story about the history of science is always fun to read, even if a bit biased – for example, if the proponents of global warming, as expected in this zaak.In is instead this book a story about money. It is a story about a group of greedy people who are dissatisfied with the funding and researchers, and the “bad” data as a scientist is usually intended to solve, and who always wanted to find new sources of financing by claiming his “discovery” of something new and sensational . And Dr. Weart is fully open and shows its belief that it is OK if the science is influenced by politics. In fact, he likes it, and as a historian of science, he is happy for this interaction analyseren.Laten hope I’m not the only one who believes that it is unacceptable for scientific research is influenced by politics, and second, that science can not determine which policy should vastgesteld.Als you see the book, try many times the number of words “finance” will be. I think it’s very frightening. Truth in science depends not on the money! These global warming alarmists seem to have a culture that science is a hostage and a tool for something else bereiken.Als makes this book, you can see many stories of some scientists who had gas concentration anywhere any action – according to old-fashioned, objective rules of science. Because they knew it was unlikely that any shock would be found in this way, they decided that they wanted something else – something that can be used to argue that a major “discovery” – this finding was called to end false measure of “global warming” (yes, after trials in the 1970s to the “global cooling call”). It is a great “theory” predicts that some 20 years from now – a time short enough to scare people, but a sufficiently long period to obtain financing for a long time and people forget that you once it has been proven wrong. There is a theory which includes Weart never be very convincing, but the decision should be based on het.Het book is, like many similar books, simplistic arguments that global climate models is simple and it should be right. Weart does not hesitate to assert that the temperature in 2050 will increase to 5. 5 degree higher, it is known that the temperature in the last 100 years have only increased by 0. 6 degrees or zo.Zelfs if you forget the question of global warming is true or not, the history described in this book are fully switched on. For example, it is only directed at America. There is nothing about the 20-century European scholars, for example. And of course there is no EC influential The Russian Academy of Sciences found that the Kyoto Protocol as a “scientifically unfounded nonsense”. Mr. Weart will not say such things – instead, he will brainwash you with nasty lies about the “scientific consensus” – the general view is becoming the only real argument “of” evangelists “. It is because he knows that such Goebbels rightly said that a lie repeated 100 times “is” waarheid.De global climate is a politicized issue for many decades – but this is one of the first book I’ve seen quite openly is that global warming alarmists are turning the computer – and pick their problems – to get more resources and support their political bondgenoten.Weart fortunately are global warming skeptics of the characteristic far-left groups’ argument that they have some links to companies. Well, I probably prefer someone who is paid by a company if a person who wants destroy the company – but the actual scientific results do not depend on such things as long as science also. Weart says openly that there is worden.Weart book describes exactly the same people who “Crichton’s State of Fear”. The difference is that Crichton novel ends with a happy ending – the bad eco-terrorists or shot, or eaten by environmentally friendly indigenous tribes – while Weart novel ends as an abomination: the same people are celebrated as heroes who have permission to close the comment garbage called “global warming” as one of the largest scientific breakthroughs of eeuw.Ik shame that these global warming people are sometimes referred to as our colleagues. • In “The Discovery of Global Warming,” Spencer R. Weart’s stated objective is to write “the story of the science of climate change” (XII). But, he argued, the discovery of human influence on global climate are outside the normal rules of scientific methode.Weart that “the confused nature of climate research mirrors nature itself. Irreducibelt global warming is so complex that we will never fully understand it, how could understand a law of physics. “(Ix) is not pseudo-science? Do not remove the study of the discipline of the scientific method incorrectly allow an individual or social prejudices to distort scientific findings? The scientific thesis Weart discoveries are nothing but the consensus of those present, they are scientists, at conventions. The conclusions of give and take among a cohort can not replace rigorous experimentation and independent verificatie.Terwijl Although interdisciplinary studies of climate, there is no excuse to get rid of the scientific method. Weart calculators, “such a logical sequence, with the final outcome, do not describe in interdisciplinary areas such as studies of climate change.” (Viii) There appears to be a questionable practice is the fundamental principle of the science of global aarde.De the scientific method instills discipline and methods of discovery. It is a process based on four steps: observation and description that leads to the formulation of a hypothesis that a phenomenon which was subsequently confirmed by independent tests to predict. Weart et al are the first step. They observe and describe a phenomenon, ie global warming, or are convinced that humans are the cause? To earth in a warming cycle is evident. Milder winters, melting glaciers, land use and fossil fuel combustion, there is reason to speculate that humans contribute, but why? Where is the evidence? Where is the control? Extreme weather conditions are reported and often seen as a sign of human impact on Earth’s climate. Number and severity of hurricanes in 2005, apparently that option. The biggest improvement in tracking hurricanes coming from the satellite to allow advanced warning. Like the weather service uses sophisticated models to predict hurricane tracks, computer models for predicting climate change. Predicting hurricane paths are unreliable and the models can not predict exactly aanlanding.Het inability to forecast and to predict the behavior of hurricanes increased costs and inconvenience of preparation. Imagine what the cost might be wrong on a global scale! Would not a more conservative target first to perfect models that accurately predict an “easy” as hurricane paths (or tornadoes, or drought?) Before we trust climate models to slightly more complicated because of the man to predict global warming? Global warming is really a hot topic button. The relevance will not blink in the following years, but the politicization of science is not the answer. Incontrovertably it is of interest to people in the environment, but in a reasonable manner. Lack of scientific verification of the debt of man to global warming, is the difficulty of determining how important and reasonable manner. This is a political issue and, contrary to Weart’s argument, we have not “run out of time.” (200) Rating: 3 / 5

  • I must admit that I am not a skeptic of global warming, so I appreciate Spencer Weart book as a “friend”. Actually I am quite worried about global warming and what will happen to our beautiful land, where each of us, Democrats and Republicans alike, to live and where we want to go on vacation and leave to our children and grandchildren and so on. Do not forget the animals! I was so impressed by Dr. Weart’s excellent explanation of the scientific debate process, I would recommend it to every student to solo. How science has reached a consensus that is now regarded as accepted fact, and I mean everything, not just global warming? Thus, ice ages and even the existence of prehistoric life, was regarded as ridiculous, especially because of religious considerations. Not to mention the development! One thing that really impressed me was how he talked about the scholarly publishing community, how it works, what happens and how years of life a person can enter only say one sentence in a major scientific. Dr. Weart also showed how science intersect with politics, often in a very bad way. Nobody can be more objective. Billions, no trillions of dollars at stake. I laughed at his often repeated refrain (capitalization his) need more money being spent on onderzoek.Ik Just scream that the book was published in 2003 and not 2006th Maybe he will give you an update soon. I hope that our grandchildren will ever read books like this and smile, “Why did they ever so worried about it?” Either global warming will prove to be a chimera (unlikely) or the future people will find clever ways to fight it (I hope). All in all, many Kudos Dr. Weart! Thanks for a beautifully written book. Rating: 5 / 5

  • I found this book very well written and interesting. I’m glad to have read, because I now understand much better development of the current argument in the case of the greenhouse effect. But an engineer accustomed to hard numbers, I was not disappointed in what they cover. The whole point of this controversy is whether the “average global temperature has risen to a degree or so over the last hundred years, and this trend is accelerating due to emissions of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Yet the concept of” global temperature “is never really defined in terms of how it is being measured. The book does not explain why the increase of carbon dioxide does not prevent the heat from the sun entering the earth’s surface and thus cause cooling! Graphs are presented showing temperature fluctuations in a backward a thousand years or more, but calibrated thermometer was first developed at the beginning of 1700 century. I do not know if global warming occurs or not, but I am very suspicious that an elegant theory, based on very sophisticated computer models, which are not supported by enough data. How and where the temperature measurement points was 100 years ago? The book shows not these important facts, and I wonder if it is not because the base is so thin that the proponents do not want it known. Rating: 3 / 5

  • Spencer R. Weart ’s The Discovery of Global Warming is a good primer on how scientists discovered global warming and why most scientists believe that man is at least partly responsible for the warming. The book is apolitical, thorough, and should be understood by anyone with at least one secondary science education. One of the best parts of the book is how well Weart describes the process of science. Personally I think it is unfortunate when one is too politicized science. Scientific questions settled, based on empirical evidence, not along party lines and not by vote. Good science is often things about the universe that we prefer to work in a different way. If you have only one book on global warming to read, I recommend The discovery of the greenhouse effect. If you plan to read one of the more controversial volumes on the issue, I recommend that you read Dr. Weart book. Rating: 5 / 5
